NOTE: While I post products that are not noted as containing animal-based materials on the site they originate from, I cannot guarantee that they are, in fact, completely vegan. Some items labeled as containing "man-made materials," for example, may contain regenerated leather or glue that is derived from animal ingredients. For more info, you can read my post on leather labeling. Some jeans may have labels made of leather. Blouses may have shell buttons. And some items labeled as being made from "textile" may contain animals fibers.
If you are interested in an item and are concerned about the materials used to manufacture it, I advise that you contact the company directly.

I love chevron stripes. Funky and classic at the same time. Clean and crisp. Check out these cute pieces from around the web. [You’ll definitely notice by never-ending obsession with Etsy.]

Ethical design company, Mission Savvy, will be on NPR’s Morning Edition tomorrow! As you may or may not know, 5% of profits generated by sales from Mission Savvy clothing collections are donated to a select group of animal welfare and conservation groups. It’s amazing to see not just vegan food, but also vegan fashion being discussed on major media outlets. Make sure you tune in!! [Check your local listings here.]
I LOVE any fabric with tiny creatures printed on it. Luckily it’s a huge trend right now, so it’s not hard to indulge. Something about these pieces are nostalgic, unique, and just make me a little happier.

After a chilly start to spring here in SF, it is now much more spring-like, and we can all whip out our sandals to keep our tootsies cool. Here are a few vegan options that make you want to break your flip-flop habit:
…and featuring it proudly on their homepage. The Urban Outfitters higher-end sister brand just came out with some super cute pieces. And they’re not labeled as “faux,” or “fake,” or “man-made.” They’re outright labeled “VEGAN,” a move that shows the company is recognizing that there is a population of women out there who love animals, and also happen to be stylish. Right. The. Eff. On.
I found out about this first when I got an email from Free People’s Naomi Huober, who summed up the company’s approach as a collection that “maintains a fashion forward aesthetic (tapping into key trends going on in leather) while catering to women who care about animals and the impact of their choices.” So they do seem to get it. And I was extra happy to see that they are not using PVC. And yesterday’s Marie Claire blog post by Amanda Hearst about the line claims they did a good job with textile selection, and that the clothing feels soft like leather - not plastic-y or stiff. Check out these shots, featuring model Barbara De Credo. (Note: I must have that hooded jacket.)
I just discovered Scotch through Pinterest, and it’s such a cool nail polish company. Reminds me of butter LONDON, which is also conscious about not using toxic ingredients. Scotch is vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, fragrance-free, toxin-free, paraben-free, hypoallergenic, and biodegradable. Plus it has some amazing colors! It’s water-based and can be buffed to a shine if your polish starts to get dull! How cool is that??
I’m a total sucker for unique nail colors. I still brag to my (eye-rolling) friends that I was the first person in my high school to do the blue nail polish trend in the 90s.
I’ve been into light/Tiffany blues, navy, oranges, reds, and greys. Sometimes two at once, like with the whole one-nail-a-different-color trend.
What colors do you like wearing on your nails these days?
The past several months in my life have been the hardest I have ever experienced. The sadness and frustration don’t ever leave as time goes on, but you somehow learn to cope, to “hang in there,” to keep hope alive, and to try to enjoy the things in life that are still good. When something awful happens, you really do realize just how much you took for granted before and that you should always cherish what you have. It’s a nice lesson for sure, but I still can’t help wanting to go back in time never having learned it. Still, I miss my family in Hungary and my friends spread over the globe like never before.
My wonderful and long-time friends Matt and Kellie are getting married in January in Vermont in what I know will be a gorgeous and comforting wedding (they even have a whole night devoted to s’mores!). A couple of months ago I couldn’t even imagine celebrating anything. But now, I can’t wait for this wedding. I want to celebrate with them, feel joy with them, and enjoy a little time with a group of friends I rarely see but always miss. Sometimes I feel that that’s selfish of me right now - to even consider feeling joy - but then I remind myself that I cannot drown myself in nothing but sorrow forever, that I need to function and feel some normalcy, that I need and want to feel joy for my friends, and that the fight for my dad will continue no matter what.
It took me a few months after my dad’s accident to start taking care of myself again. My first step was painting my nails a few weeks ago. Then I got a haircut. I bought some clothes for work. It probably sounds crazy that these things felt like a major effort for a while, but they did. They not only felt pointless - they felt like an impossibility. Now I am at the point where I feel ok about looking for a dress for this wedding - In fact, I’m actually enjoying looking for one. And finding a pair of shoes to go with it. And to think about a hairstyle. I still feel a tinge of discomfort now and then, like it’s wrong somehow to focus on those things, but I am trying to push through that. I have always loved clothes, and something like this gets my mind off everything else for a little bit.
I thought about designing and making my own dress. But who am I kidding? I so won’t make enough time for that before January, especially since I am back in class (which has sort of become my weekly time of zen during all this).
So the search for a dress commences. I think I have found one I like, but I wanted to post a few others I’ve come across, as I am sure other vegans out there are looking for holiday party dresses this time of year. Hopefully, this will help you out a bit.

Thuja Dress from Anthropologie
The dress I may wear - what do you think?

Tibi Paisley Jacquard Nadja Dress
I’m sort of obsessed with this dress. Actually I’s sort of obsessed with jacquard in general this season.

Malene Birger Isalena Sequined Dress
Love that this is a simple shift dress shape, but with so much more going on.
Kate Spade Gail Dress
The perfect Little Black Dress with the perfect Little Blue Tights. I sort of think this whole look is amazing. Swap those shoes with some Neuaura shoes and you’ve got a veganized outfit.

L.A.M.B. Runway Print Maxi Dress
I’m usually not a fan of tribal prints, but I think that’s because I’ve never seen it done right. But the colors are so amazing, so perfect for fall, that I can’t help but love this dress.

Sequins can go so very wrong. But not here.
I recently discovered the blog Kendi Everyday, which, arguably, has one of the best blog descriptions ever: “People think that when you get married and move to a small town you should get pregnant. I started a blog. (It’s a girl).”
I love Kendi’s style - laid back, but neat, a little hipster sometimes (in a good way), but also always classic. Through her blog, I discovered Ruche, an online store that pretty much sells stuff as adorable as anthropologie but at much more reasonable prices. One of the coolest things about Ruche is their large selection of accidentally vegan shoes (and non-silk blouses!). They have tons, all pretty affordable. Here are four I really dig.
clockwise from left:
Twist Striped Lace Up Flats, $42.50
Chelsea Crew “Nova” T-Strap Heels, $64.99
Carley Mary Jane Wedges, $70.99
Poodle Oxford, $54.99
P.S. Kendi now also has her own storefront that recently opened, called bloom. Very cool and definitely something this blogger aspires to.
